Rather than develop a unique focus on energy design the Planning & Building Unit has taken a more holistic approach and has developed technical guidance on energy efficiency in school designs as an integral part of a suite of technical guidance documents. These technical guidance documents set the benchmark for sustainable design in school buildings with a clear focus on energy efficiency and they are based on solid energy research projects. The Departments policy is supported by a strong research programme with research projects at various stages.
