Micro-CHP Field Trial

The CHP Policy Group established that the market for micro-CHP, while still at the research, development and demonstration stage, may provide a very significant opportunity for CHP growth if the new technologies under development are successful in the longer term. Accordingly, SEAI commenced an investigation into the viability of micro-CHP encompassing both single-phase domestic micro-CHP and 3-phase commercial micro-CHP technologies in 2006.

A call for proposals for twelve 3-phase commercial micro-CHP installations was launched in January 2007 providing financial and technical supports to candidate commercial micro-CHP sites. A comprehensive set of data monitoring and logging equipment is being installed on each of the trial sites to allow the performance of the micro-CHP units to be monitored closely.

SEAI has approved proposals for all twelve commercial sites sought under this call for proposals and the call is now closed. Data from operational micro-CHP sites is being evaluated and following an appropriate evaluation period the outcome of the trial will be published which will include recommendations on the deployment of micro-CHP.
