Is a BER Assessment mandatory?

No, a BER assessment is not mandatory. However, there is a grant of €200 for those who choose to have a BER assessment completed Before and AfterHome Energy Saving works are completed.

What do you mean by Before and After BER?
For a homeowner to qualify for the Before and After BER grant they must undertake a BER before commencing any measures AND a subsequent BER once measures are completed.

This Before BER in conjunction with the advisory report and any additional advice you might give will identify areas in the house that would benefit from measures available under the HES scheme.

The After BER will give the homeowner revised information reflecting the impact that the measures undertaken have had on their energy usage.

How do I get involved in the HES scheme?

  • Review the information here on the website and get an understanding of the HES scheme.
  • Identify homeowners in your area that may benefit from the HES scheme.
  • Discuss with these homeowners the benefits of getting a Before and After BER. Please be aware that the homeowner can get the Before BER now, i.e. before grant application.
  • To carry out BER assessments in the HES scheme you must be an SEAI registered BER assessor.

Can the Before BER be completed before the homeowner is approved for a grant?
Yes. The objective of the first BER is to help the householder identify the works they should undertake and therefore should be completed before their application to the HES scheme.
