Appliance Labelling Legislation
Under EU legislation suppliers, distributors and retailers of appliances have certain responsibilities:
- Suppliers and distributors are required to produce the labelling material and to make sure it is accurate.
- Retailers are required to ensure that all display models carry the correct energy labels.
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, working in association with the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs, has a team of 18 inspectors who monitor the correct operation of the energy labelling scheme.
Retail outlets are inspected on a regular basis to check if they are complying with the energy labelling regulations. The sanction for non-compliance with these regulations includes a fine of up to €3,000 and/or a jail sentence of up to six months.
