Cork School

Co. Cork

Residents:                        680 students and 54 staff members

Overview:

With 680 students and 54 staff members it was certainly a challenge to instill the power of one message into each and everyone, a challenge which was warmly welcomed by the Transition Year students who took the lead in the ‘energy makeover’.

The 2nd and 4th year students kept regular logs of different actions they took in order to reduce their energy consumption throughout the school. They made sure lights were not being left on in classrooms when they were not being used and on bright sunny days they avoided using any lights in the school wherever possible.

All the simple changes which were made throughout the school during the course of the challenges allowed everyone to get involved depending on how interested they were and how much free time they had. The staff, students and janitor did a fantastic job of understanding how they could make energy savings while at the same time still using their heating system, hot water, lighting, computers and printers more efficiently.
