House: Detached 1970s; solid wall construction Overview: The Heffernans quickly figured out the best ways to meet the challenges. The biggest difficulty was for all of them to maintain their new regime with the pressures of busy modern lives. However, the analysis and feedback given to them on how their changes were reducing their energy consumption helped them stay the course. The Heffernans took to the challenge right away turning radiators on/off when needed and turning the ones in the open plan kitchen, good dining room and spare bedroom off altogether. They also started experimenting with turning the heating off earlier in the evening – all these actions reduced their energy consumption right away. |
