Co. Clare Residents: Four - two parents, one son and Fluff the cat House: Detached, built in1991; cavity wall construction Overview: The Joyce family has always been interested in saving energy, both from an ecological and economic point of view. They have already put a few basic tips into practice, such as changing bulbs to CFLs, not leaving appliances on standby and putting timers on the boiler and immersion. Nevertheless their energy usage is still quite high even with the changes they had made. The Joyce’s reduced the length of time they had the heat on for in the evenings by 30 minutes. As the weather became milder they continuously adjusted the heating timer settings in the morning and evenings, reducing it by 5 or 10 minutes whenever they could. They made sure to close their curtains at night and to close all internal doors separating the warmer parts of the house from the cooler parts of the house. They also turned off the radiators in the rooms not being used. They would only air out the house for short periods at a time only when necessary so as not to lose all the heat from the house. |
