Co. Cavan Residents: Five - two parents and three young children House: Semi-detached, built in 2003, timber framed construction Overview: The Watterson family was very interested in learning how they can reduce their energy bills. The Watterson’s main problems are remembering to switch off equipment and not to leave things on standby. The Watterson’s went from having their central heating on all of the time to just having it on for an hour and a half in the morning and for four and a half hours in the evenings. They continuously changed the thermostat setting on their gas boiler depending on how cold it was outside rather than leaving it at the same temperature all of the time. They turned off the radiator in the hall, and used the kitchen and dining room more often during the day when they were at home looking after the kids. Because of the simple changes they made around the house the Watterson’s got used to a slightly lower yet still comfortable temperature rather than having the house too warm all of the time. |
