Microgeneration Training Providers

SEAI recommends that micro-generator specifiers and installers receive appropriate accredited training. It will be a requirement for listing on the SEAI list of registered installers that this training is successfully completed. Further evidence of training, provided by the equipment manufacturer, will also be required when registering as a wind turbine installer. For details on product and installer registration please refer to the guidance on the register of installers and register of products.

The following is a complete list (at October 2010) of accredited micro-generation training courses and facilities on the Island of Ireland:

The courses listed above are the only courses available which are recognized by SEAI for the purposes of installer registration.

Established wind turbine manufacturers also provide training courses for installers of their equipment and indeed some will not supply a turbine to an installer unless they have undergone manufacturer approved training. Micro-wind installers wishing to register with SEAI must also have completed such manufacturer training for the equipment models they will be installing. A combination of the training provided by an accredited training body and the practical training provided by a quality wind turbine manufacturer should equip suppliers and installers well with the foundations on which to build a good service to their clients.

It should be noted however, as with any business, that the successful completion of training does not guarantee quality of service but simply provides assurance that minimum training standards have been achieved.

The generic City & Guilds PV course is sufficient for PV installers as the technology does not vary widely between manufacturers.

SEAI has worked with FÁS and FETAC to develop training and qualification requirements with a view to having a national qualification in place as soon as possible. See the FAQ on future training developments.

The wiring and sign-off of a grid connected micro-generation system must be completed to ETCI standards as the electrical portion of a microgenerator installation isdefined as a 'controlled works' by the Statutory body with responsibility for electrical safety (the CER).The electrician should be a member of a certified trade body such as RECI and ECSSA.

It is SEAI's understanding that no other training sites, other than those listed above, provide accredited training. If you are a training provider and your site is has become accredited by a recognized awarding body to deliver accredited electricity micro-generation training course (e.g. City & Guilds) please make contact with martin.mccarthy@reio.ie with evidence of accreditation (course and site).
