Ocean Energy Engineering Support Requirements
Ireland has an objective of generating 40% of electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2020. In the case of Ocean Energy (Wave and Tidal), there is a specific target of generating 500MW by 2020 in the Republic. This poses significant challenges and opportunities, particularly for the Engineering, Ports and Shipping sectors.
The Ocean Energy Development Unit (OEDU), established by the Irish Government to develop and implement the programme of activities necessary to achieve this target, has commissioned a report on the infrastructure requirements necessary for the large-scale deployment of wave and tidal technology projects.
This has been undertaken by RPS and is intended to serve as a starting point for consideration about how the private and public sector can mobilise the delivery of the infrastructure and industry capabilities that are necessary if Ireland is to capitalise on the supply-chain opportunities associated with development of our huge marine renewable energy resource.
On 29th June 2009 at Enterprise Ireland's HQ in East Point Business Park, the OEDU launched the study entitled A Review of Engineering and Specialist Support Requirements for the Ocean Energy Sector. The presentations from the event are available for download here:
