i-Solar

This project by students from the Marist College, Athlone, Westmeath was shortlisted for ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards programme 2009. The students were alarmed by the large amounts of non-renewable fossil fuels burnt every day to produce electricity. The aim of the project was to find an alternative energy source for charging an iPod.

Team i-Solar

They decided to build a solar powered iPod charger to promote solar energy. As well as producing this charger they distributed questionnaires to students and staff in their school and crated large display boards with information about Climate Change and solar energy. They successfully constructed a solar panel charger for an iPod and encouraged students and staff to take responsibility for the environment and make changes to reduce their carbon footprint.
