Use reusable bags instead of paper bags when shopping
Using a solar powered phone charger
1
Washing your clothes at 30 degrees
it uses less energy and your clothes will be as clean as if they were washed at higher temperature.
2
Turn your TV off rather than leave it on stand-by
equipment on stand-by uses up to 20% of the energy it would use when fully on.
3
Walk or cycle instead of driving for short journeys
it costs nothing and is good for you.
4
Turn your heating down
reducing your thermostat by 1 degree celsius will knock 10% off your heating bill
5
Use energy efficient light bulbs (CFLs) instead of traditional bulbs
they use 1/5th energy and last up to 10 times as long
6
Don't overfill your kettle
only boil as much water as you need
7
Using a solar powered phone charger
electricity wasted from mobile phones left on standby is enough to power 33,000 homes for a year
8
Wait for the dishwasher to be full before you switch it on
a half full one uses the same energy as a full one
9
Switch off lights when you leave a room
energy is wasted lighting unoccupied rooms
10
Avoid unnecessary electricity use between 5pm and 7pm
help reduce national CO2 emissions
11
Take a shower
a typical shower uses only one fifth of the energy required to produce a full bath.
12
Unplug or switch off the TV or sound system when you are not using them
use energy even in 'stand-by' mode.
13
Keep the curtains closed at night
this keeps the heat in the room.
14
Grow your own fruit and vegetables
you will save CO2 used to transport and package mass produced fruit and vegetables.
15
Use reusable bags instead of paper bags when shopping
this saves energy needed to make and dispose of paper bags.
16
Using your radio
Tuning in to radio stations on your TV can be over ten times more energy intensive than listening through the radio.
