Primary Energy
Primary Energy source is one that can release its energy directly upon combustion. When wood is burned heat and light energy are released. Coal, Peat and Natural Gas are used in many homes for cooking and heat while many homes use oil and gas for central heating.

| The main use for Primary Energy sources is to heat water and use the steam to turn turbines to generate electricity. This is done in power stations. Water also turns turbines to provide hydro-electricity. Diagram 2 above shows how Ireland's electricity was generated during the years 1990 to 2008. |
Electricity is known as a Secondary Energy source because it is generated by the use of a Primary Energy source. Electricity is created in generators by the turning of turbines that are powered by steam or water.
