The main energy efficiency opportunities in the sector are buildings based and key organisations have already started to reap the rewards by signing up to the Energy Partnership programme. These include An Garda Siochana, Courts Service of Ireland, Irish Defence forces, Irish Prisons Service and Department of Justice and Law Reform.
Defence Forces responded to public sector targets by launching its own 2020 project, which commits all barracks and military facilities to a minimum 3% year-on-year emissions cut until 2020. To help achieve this, a formal Defence Forces Energy Register was established for all military establishments in 2009.
By showing such commitment to improving energy management, Justice organisations and Defence Forces can avail of SEAI support - at no cost - including the provision of information, access to energy experts and implementation support.
