Key achievements

SEAI Grants

Funding was accessed through the SEAI Better Energy Communities (BEC) grant scheme. It was applied for by the Kilkenny North BEC project.

Commercial revival

The new lighting has revived commercial areas on John St and Kieran St in terms of commercial activity and enhanced security.

Residential safety

The residential estates involved have benefited from better light output enhancing security at night and peace of mind.

Heritage considered

Considerations were successfully made in regards to the heritage and traditional value of Kilkenny City.

The project

Kilkenny City Engineers worked with the Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (CKEA) to deliver a public lighting retrofit project for specific areas within Kilkenny City. The project had to be:

  • Energy efficient
  • Sympathetic to Kilkenny’s traditional and heritage value
  • Follow the lighting consultants plan

Following a design and tender process work began in June 2014 and was completed in October of that year. Five types of LED lamp were used; 34W, 38W, 43W Streetlight, 50W copper heritage lantern, and 137W decorative streetlights.

The Kilkenny City energy efficient public lighting project will contribute to Kilkenny County Council reaching their 33% energy targets by 2020. This project not only reduces energy and CO2 emissions but also promotes sustainable travel and safety. We in CKEA were delighted to work on this project in conjunction with Kilkenny City.
