In the current age of fast paced and tweet sized communications, getting the message through on the big ideas around the need for a world transformation to sustainable energy technologies and practices is becoming more challenging. Since the decisions that need to be made around energy infrastructure development are costly, both on the supply side (electricity generation, renewable heat production, grid infrastructure, storage etc.) and the demand side (building and house energy efficiency upgrades), they can't be based on back-of-the envelope calculations; but who wants to read a 80 - 100 page report? Perhaps there are a few of us left, but it is clear to get widespread appreciation of the issues, and potential solutions, the results of detailed analysis need to be conveyed in simple and impactful terms.

SEAI has recently launched a new interactive energy data portal. This is one form in which we are developing our capacity to deliver outputs of our detailed analysis and modelling work to users in a digestible way.

The interactive charts provide visitors with an easy interface to investigate historic energy use statistics across different fuels and sectors, as well as how energy use is projected to change out to 2030. It does this by combining Ireland's historical energy statistics with SEAI's energy forecast.

What's great about the energy data portal

The portal allows users to Investigate and tailor several interactive charts including primary energy supply by fuel, final energy use by fuel and final energy demand by sector. A breakdown of energy use in all sectors of the Irish economy, from households, to industry, transport, public and commercial sectors is also available for analysis. Why not take a look at the balance between fossil fuels and renewable energy in different sectors? Or take a look back to 1990, where our data starts, and see how energy use has evolved over time? Both aggregate and detailed data breakdown into sub-sector and fuel derivatives are available and the timeframe displayed can be adjusted to further tailor chart outputs.

We have also included projected energy trends illustrating our forecast data for a possible future energy scenario out to 2030. Disruptive notes are provided under the charts detailing the relevant assumptions to give further explanation and background to the data. For those who want to do their own analysis, the raw data can be downloaded directly to excel for further analysis. This feature will be of particular interest to the research community.

People it might interest

The portal will be of interest to researchers, students, teachers, people working in the energy sector, government, media and the general public with an interest in energy supply and use in Ireland.

It will continue to expand during 2017 to include more of the rich data bank that SEAI holds. Possible future modules include energy prices for businesses and households, building energy rating statistics, energy related emissions, and more detailed sectoral and technology based statistics. Jim has over 14 years working in the field of policy analysis and development related to environmental issues. He currently manages the Energy Modelling Group at SEAI. This involves developing analysis and advice relating to energy policy issues for Ireland in the context of EU and national energy targets, sustainability and economic goals.

Jim has over 18 years’ experience working in the field of policy analysis and development related to environmental issues. He joined SEAI in 2007 and is currently Head of Department (Data and Insights) responsible for energy statistics, modelling, behavioural economics and finance at SEAI. He holds a Professional Diploma in Advanced Management Performance (Smurfit Business School), MSc. Economic Policy Studies (Trinity College Dublin), BSc. Environmental Science (Flinders University, South Australia). Jim is passionate about getting people connected to the need for climate action now.
