Project Description
This proposal builds upon the research conducted under the 2017 SEAI RD&D funded project Deep Energy Renovation of Traditional Buildings: Addressing Knowledge Gaps and Skills Training in Ireland. To support Irish building specifiers with the challenges and risks of renovating traditional buildings for improved energy efficiency, the Deep Energy Renovation report compiles in one place the relevant technical and regulatory guidance. An assessment of the current state of knowledge is the first step in the process of preparing the Irish building industry to tackle the challenges presented by climate change. The natural next step is to develop a training module to embed a best practice approach to the energy renovation of traditional buildings within the Irish building industry. The Irish Green Building Council have identified a skills gap in energy renovation across all sectors of the building industry in Ireland and currently no training schemes exist to upskill building specifiers in the energy renovation of traditional buildings. To do so, we, the original team from the aforementioned 2017 SEAI-funded project, will work with the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), Engineers Ireland and the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) to develop a series of CPD modules to provide best practice guidance on renovation risks, hydrothermal assessment, and balancing heritage conservation with energy saving demands.
