Project Description
This project aims to design and test a novel flexible self-powered smart window technology. This novel technology will have commercial development potential to enable energy savings in domestic and commercial buildings. Ireland’s National Renewable Energy Action Plan includes aims to develop and apply technology for energy efficient buildings. This technology is based on a novel design based on a multilayer transparent system formed through combining carefully chosen responsive materials. The resulting system is expected to be capable of automatically, self-powered, alteration of transmission, thereby acting as a self-powered smart window. The smart window is made using ‘green’ technology, based on sustainable and environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes creating a cost effective design. The resulting technology will be applied as a smart window technology and will be tested and optimised for application in Ireland.
