SEAI aims to improve the coherence of Irish energy research and development. This will help us build a cleaner and more secure energy future, while enhancing our knowledge economy.

What we do

The SEAI research team support research and innovation across the energy sector. We invest in projects in Ireland, and identify areas of priority for both Ireland and Europe.

National energy research funding

We invest in research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects in the sustainable energy sector. Our funding programmes support Ireland’s transition towards a lower carbon society. We aim to position Ireland as an international leader in energy RD&D activities.

The 2023 Call will open for applications in March 2023.

International energy research

In collaboration with Enterprise Ireland, SEAI is Ireland's national delegate and national contact point for Energy related topics under Cluster 5, Pillar 2 (global challenges and EU industrial competitiveness) of the European Commission's Horizon Europe funding programme.

We also take part in and represent Ireland at international fora, including the International Energy Agency, EU and UNFCCC. Participation in international collaborations ensure that we use the best possible methods in our transition to a cleaner energy future.

Energy research database

The National Energy Research Database is a central resource for energy RD&D projects. It gives information on projects which have been publicly funded in Ireland. Browse the database to learn more about past and current energy research around the country.
