Project Description
District Heating (DH) is a proven, well-established technology used extensively in cities and towns across Europe and contributes significantly to energy sustainability through the easy integration of renewable and energy efficient resources into the heating sector. There is currently a lack of knowledge and guidance for effective development of DH in Ireland. These elements are essential for creation of local level policy to support establishment of DH networks in Irish towns and cities. This project will highlight the positive impacts of existing DH systems in Ireland through 3 case studies of established Irish DH projects, and show the technical and economic aspects of establishing new systems in a variety of situations, i.e. rural/urban, replacing gas/oil, using biomass/waste heat/CHP, etc., through 3 in-depth technoeconomic analyses of opportunity sites. An Irish DH manual will outline a step-by-step approach to establishing DH, including crucial aspects such as considerations for strategic planning, pre-feasibility analyses, business models and implementation of DH systems, and key FAQs which commonly arise.
