Project Description
This research gathers factual data on the improvement of building energy performance brought about by the application of several low-cost, draught reduction measures in six buildings of two typologies – solid wall (pre 1940) and cavity wall construction. This is achieved by; Measuring the baseline air permeability of the houses using the air blower test.; Applying draught reduction measures (chimney balloons, draught stripping) incrementally and determining their impact at reducing the air permeability of the house. From this the effectiveness of each draught reduction measures can be quantified.; Compare energy bills from before and after the retrofitting measures took place to determine if the measures have an impact on thermal energy usage (ongoing); Questionnaires to assess the perceived impact of the draught reduction measures on occupant thermal comfort; Logging of the internal temperature and relative humidity to ascertain indoor air temperature and quality;
