Project Description

This research project will provide an assessment of the current energy use indicated by light at night and identify areas where more energy efficient hardware and methods can be used in lighting. Also to identify hotspots of energy use, based on observed demand through connection of light emission with land use. This proposal aims to quantify energy use in all forms of outdoor lighting by measurements with satellite and ground-based instruments. Outcomes from this project will include a database of georeferenced images from which historical and on-going energy use can be obtained, and papers addressing light output from residential, commercial, industrial and public locations and their correlations with economic and other indicators.
