About the course
The course explores teaching approaches that develop numeracy skills in an integrated way across the curriculum, specifically through Science and Geography.
- Two days will focus on Discover Primary Science and Maths
- Two days will focus on SEAI’s resources for primary schools
- The fifth day will involve an energy and science related field trip
During the course teachers will find out how to teach Science and Maths through an inquiry based approach to learning. The main curriculum areas covered by the course are SESE (Science and Geography) and Maths, with a focus on skills.

Discover Primary Science and Maths
Day 1 and 2
The course will include hands-on sessions based around the DPSM/ESERO Framework for Inquiry and a range of classroom based activities, which have been developed, tested and used widely by primary teachers. The DPSM/ESERO Framework for Inquiry has been developed by DPSM facilitators and teachers working with science education specialists. It is designed to be used in the planning and teaching of a topic, or theme, on the SESE Science curriculum.
SEAI Schools Programme
Day 3 and 4
Developed by DCU (formerly St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra), SEAI’s Primary programme is designed to support children develop their knowledge about energy, energy efficiency and conservation within the SESE curriculum. Over the two days, you will complete hands on activities and explore energy and science in a real world way. This will help expand your knowledge about how and why as a society, we need to develop new ways of looking at our energy resources.
Resources include programme booklets, interactive whiteboard resources and teacher guidelines. All of the investigations and activities are directly related to the content in the strand units of the Primary Science Curriculum.
On the final day of the course we will bring you aon a field trip where you will see first hand energy or science related activity in action.
