Project Description

Pure Marine Gen (Ireland) Ltd is developing the DUO wave energy converter, which captures wave energy simultaneously from multiple modes of motion, in particular – heave (vertical motion) and pitch/surge (a rocking/horizontal motion). The extended range of power capture delivers a significant increase in the Annual Climate Capture Width compared to state of the art concepts of a similar size and cost. The performance advantages of the DUO were validated by selection of the DUO for the final in the US Dept. of Energy's “Wave Energy Prize” competition in 2016. This project will complete R&D activities involving numerical modelling and tank testing to determine system architectures for the DUO, and its PTO system, that can be deployed for accessible markets for small scale electricity generation and desalination in remote locations - as a stepping stone to utility scale deployments in the longer term. The project aims to set a new benchmark for the ACE metric and position the DUO as the leading floating wave energy converter.
