Energy Labelling and Ecodesign
Learn about SEAI's role in ensuring awareness and compliance with EU labelling and ecodesign regulations. Find out more about energy labels and what they mean.
EU regulations of high energy use products
A wide range of high use energy products are covered by the EU Ecodesign, Energy Labelling and Tyre Labelling Regulation. These include many household appliances, building service products, and industrial products. All products covered use significant amounts of energy in an EU context.
As well as informing market operators about their obligations and setting minimum standards, the regulations give consumers important energy information through labelling.
SEAI's market surveillance role in Ireland
We are the authority responsible for carrying out market surveillance of these regulations in Ireland. This includes:
- Compliance promotion – raising awareness and educating market operators on their obligations under the regulations
- Compliance monitoring – undertaking both planned and responsive inspections
- Compliance verification – documentation and laboratory checks
Market Surveillance Authority
SEAI is the Market Surveillance Authority (MSA) for the enforcement of legislation relating to tyre labelling, energy labelling and ecodesign of energy-related products in Ireland. In December 2022, the MSA designation transferred from the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to SEAI, and the relevant national statutory instruments have been updated to S.I. No. 669/2022 European Union (Energy Labelling) Regulations 2022, S.I. No. 670/2022 European Union (Tyre Labelling) (Energy Efficiency) Regulations 2022 and S.I. No. 671/2022 European Union (Ecodesign Requirements for Certain Energy-Related Products) (Amendment) Regulations 2022.
