Project Description

The Electricity Grid is seeing more significant changes in the make-up, location and profiles of generation and demand in the past 10 years than over the past 100 years. Traditionally the Transmission Grid was made up of passive elements to connect the generation to the demand. This is changing rapidly as more dynamic power flow and network control devices are needed and deployed. Previous research carried out in the PJM Footprint in the USA has shown Power Flow Control, installed instead of new infrastructure projects, yielded production cost savings of $3.8B over 5 years. Modelling, controlling and co-ordinating network control devices, which can change network characteristics in real time, is an extremely complex problem.
