Project Description
The main objective of the project is to develop and apply a multi-criteria Renewable Energy STORage (RESTOR) planning model for islands for supporting decision-making for their energy system transformation. RESTOR will incorporate multiple sustainability criteria (economic, environmental, technical, social) in the evaluation, selection and ranking of possible energy storage projects taking into account the local needs & perspectives of the end users and the integration of regional stakeholders in the planning. Applications of the RESTOR model include five case-studies (Pilots) in EU and beyond and the results will be validated and tested at another three (3) case-studies (Followers). The project’s steps include: description of the methods used, specification of system requirements and definitions of relevant concepts; development of the RESTOR Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) planning model; application of the RESTOR model to the Pilot islands and comparative analysis of the results; replication validation and testing of the process to the Follower islands in the EU and beyond; summing up of the overall lessons learnt & knowledge sharing and development of policy issues, business models and recommendations. RESTOR would provide informed guidance for regional decision makers in order to identify and implement an appropriate portfolio of energy storage projects to couple with renewable energy sources production facilities for their islands.
