A new package of energy‑efficiency grants has just been announced, including, for the first time, a standalone grant specifically for windows and doors. That means you no longer need to commit to a full home energy upgrade to access support. You can simply apply for the upgrades you need.

A new grant designed for real homes and real needs

Until now, grants for windows and doors were only available through the One Stop Shop route, and only if you were upgrading your home to at least a BER B2 rating. That excluded many homeowners who simply wanted to replace draughty windows or an old front door.

Now, the rules have changed. You can apply for windows and doors as a standalone upgrade, making it far easier and more affordable to improve your home’s comfort and energy performance.

Is your home eligible?

The new grant is designed to help homeowners replace:

  • Single‑glazed windows
  • Older double‑glazed windows
  • Inefficient or poorly sealed external doors

To qualify, your home must:

  • Have been built and occupied before 2011
  • Have adequate attic and wall insulation
  • Must have an MPRN

Many homes already meet these insulation requirements, but if yours doesn’t, you can still qualify once insulation is upgraded (and yes, there are grants for that too).

How to check whether your insulation meets the standard

Before you apply, it’s worth confirming whether your attic and wall insulation are up to scratch. Here’s how to check:

1. Look at Past Upgrades

If your home previously received an SEAI grant for attic or wall insulation, you’re already good to go.

2. Review Your BER Advisory Report

If your report rates attic and wall insulation as Good” or Very Good”, you meet the requirement. You can find your BER certificate and advisory report on the national register using your MPRN.

3. No Recent BER? Get a BER Assessor’s Advice

A BER assessor can review older reports or carry out a pre‑works BER. If insulation upgrades are needed, SEAI grants are available to help cover the cost.

Why insulation comes first

You might wonder why insulation is a requirement for a windows and doors grant. The reason is simple: without proper insulation, heat escapes through your walls and roof long before it reaches your windows.

In an under‑insulated home, new windows and doors won’t deliver the comfort or energy savings you expect, and in some cases, they can even worsen issues like dampness or uneven heating.

But when combined with good attic and wall insulation, high‑performing windows and doors can significantly improve comfort and help make your home heat‑pump ready.

Who can apply?

The grant is open to a wide range of applicants, including:

  • Homeowners
  • Landlords
  • Companies and owner‑management companies
  • Approved housing bodies
  • Registered charities

It also applies to roof windows and skylights, which is great news for anyone planning a loft upgrade.

How much funding is available?

You can receive up to €5,600 depending on your home type and the number of doors you replace.

Windows Grant Amounts

  • Apartment: €1,500
  • Mid‑Terrace: €1,800
  • Semi‑Detached / End‑Terrace: €3,000
  • Detached: €4,000

Doors Grant Amounts

  • €800 per external door
  • Maximum of two doors

Do I have to replace both windows and doors?

Not at all. You can apply for:

  • Windows only
  • Doors only
  • Or both

As long as the products installed are high‑performing and energy efficient, you can choose whichever upgrade suits your home.

Already ordered new windows or doors? You may still qualify

If you ordered or started work on or after 27 January, you may still be eligible — provided you meet the scheme requirements and use a registered contractor.

When can I apply?

Applications open Monday, 2 March.

  • If you’re working with a One Stop Shop, they’ll handle the application for you.
  • If you’re applying yourself, the online application link will be available from the same date.
