Limerick farmhouse transforms from BER G to A2
Mark's family farmhouse underwent a home energy upgrade through SEAI's One Stop Shop service and was upgraded from BER G to A2.
Background
Mark Flanagan, his wife and three children moved to their Limerick farmhouse last November. It was important for Mark to find a home that suited his family and also came with their own farm. The original house was a stone building with various extensions added on over the years. Mark used the SEAI website to research energy upgrades and find a grant route that would meet his needs. He decided to go with the One Stop Shop grant route as the One Stop Shop would manage the entire process, from the initial assessment of the home through to the final BER. He was also guaranteed a BER B2 or higher. All paperwork would be completed by the One Stop Shop and grants would be deducted upfront, making the project more affordable.
Mark contacted Kore Retrofit, a well established One Stop Shop provider and award winning contractor. They advised on the energy upgrades required to bring the house to a minimum B2. Following this meeting and agreeing on the budget, Kore got stuck in. First, they demolished the house leaving just four walls and the roof rafters. they then started to rebuild the original house and add on an extension.
We wanted to retain the old character of the building, upgrade the whole heating and insulation. The grants from SEAI would help us along the road.
The Project
After carrying out a home energy assessment Kore retrofit recommended the below home energy upgrades;
- Floor insulation
- Roof insulation
- External and internal insulation
- Heat pump and heating system
- Heat recovery system
Mark and his family moved out while their new home turned into a building site. The project took a few months to complete but Mark says that it was definitely worth the wait.
We’ve three kids who are into sport and into farming; the shower never stops here. The whole setup is fantastic with the constant hot water.
Results
The house was a BER G to a BER A2. This is a remarkable result for an old farmhouse. Mark and his family are thrilled with their newly refurbished warm and cosy home. "Solar panels and an EV are next on the list", said Mark.
