Fundamental skills

To register as a non-domestic BER assessor, you need to show technical knowledge and competence in a construction related area. You'll have to provide proof of qualifications and membership of a professional body.

NFQ Level 7 degree/qualification in a building or construction-related discipline. You must have covered at least two of the subjects listed in the document below, for at least two semesters each.

Non-domestic BER training course

To join the register, you must complete the Non-Domestic BER Assessor Training Course with one of SEAI’s listed training providers. You'll need to achieve a minimum grade of 70% in the final assessment of the training course.

The learning outcomes are split into six areas: 

  1. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the national calculation methodology (NCM)
  2. Building type, activity and NCM databases
  3. Building geometry and zoning
  4. Identify and input HVAC systems
  5. Part L of the Building Regulations and using software to show compliance
  6. Using SBEM to carry out calculations and interpreting results
